As we approach the New Year, it is pertinent that we establish a strong, cement like spiritual foundation with GOD. One that shall not be moved, changed, or predicated on circumstances. The objective is NOT to know OF him, but really formulate a connection that symbolizes trust, belief, and true dependability. I have a question for you, how much do you read the word of GOD on your own? Do you know the word, or do you know what someone told you that’s in the bible? Now is the time to take control of your spiritual relationship by studying independently to better equip you for YOUR call. I have another question, when you attend church services do you take notes? Do you write down the scriptures and refer back to them when necessary? I encourage you to take the information received from your leaders and use them as you transition into your seasons of elevation. Don’t become so complacent with rituals that you neglect the relationship.
“If you want change, it starts with your mindset”. You have to change YOU before you can change your circumstances. Even so with GOD, you have to know HIM before elevating into who he has called you to be. You learn who he is by studying his word and being obedient to his voice. The reality is this, it starts with YOU. Simple right? Take a stand for change, make up in your mind that you will seek The Lord first, above everything else. I know you’re tired of producing the same diabolical seasons that you are attempting to overcome. Let’s start today…We have to take an internal inventory before seeing external results. Dennis Kimbro stated in his book Daily Motivations for African-American Success “When we take the time to search inward for change, we see everything in a different light”.
If we are going to be brutally honest, I must say this, some of us don’t want to change because it will shift us out of our comfort zones. What I have found to be true is that people want the fruit but not the process it takes to produce it. T.D. Jake’s stated in his book Instinct “Too many people want the appearance of winning rather than the practices and hard work that creates a true champion”. Same goes with religion and spirituality. People don’t want to have a true relationship with GOD (one that forces us to be obedient), they just want the appearance of it. Scripture states in 2 Timothy 2:15 “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to GOD approved, a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing the Word of Truth”. Verse 16 states “Avoid all empty talk, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness”. So what is the scripture telling us? It is saying we have to study, we have to show ourselves approved, we have to avoid the contamination of useless talk and live a life pleasing unto The Lord. As convenient as it is to consult with other people ALL the time, we have to understand that WE have to do the work in order to reap the benefits. We have to rebuke spiritual laziness and work like heaven is within arm’s reach. I don’t know about you, but when I meet my maker face to face I want him to smile and say “well done my good and faithful servant”.
Let us switch gears for a moment. How many of you have encountered a person who attends every church service, is on every conference/prayer call, listen to testimony after testimony, read every self-help book but will NOT pick up the word and use it in their time of need? This is also a form of spiritual laziness. Even though you attending different functions, you are doing NOTHING outside of that. How many of you have encountered a friend that totally relies on a word from you instead of creating their own spiritual connection? More often than none, people like to hear the word from everyone else because they want the blessing, not the relationship. Also spiritual laziness… My dear friends, it is time for us to be accountable. Let us walk into next season will the tools we’ve received and be attentive to our walk so that our lives, relationships and circumstances can improve, shift, and be transformed. Romans 12:2 states “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will”. So, just because you’ve witnessed certain aspects of Christianity with your mom or grandmother, doesn’t mean you have to stick to just what they did. We are a generation of change, we have to learn more, dig deeper, and we have to put in the work.
Side note: Have you noticed that our reactions are different when go through something personally? We can be encouraged, we can even encourage others, but when we experience a speed bump in life, we totally switch gears and go into defense mode with GOD. We should really go into defense mode with the enemy, letting him know that you will conquer all. James 1:12 denotes “Blessed is the man who is patient under trial and stands up under temptation, for when he has stood the test and been approved, he will receive the crown of life which GOD has promised to those who love him”.
I don’t know if you paid attention, but in all scriptures listed above, approved was mentioned. This is totally random, but have you ever went to make a purchase but your credit score was not sufficient for the purchase? What did you do? Did you adjust your lifestyle? Did you ask a friend what they did to improve their credit score? Or did you take advice from a financial advisor? It is important to focus on this, most people would rather take the purchase at a higher interest rate (meaning will pay more and longer) in order to expedite “the blessing” oppose to holding out and correcting the problem at hand. By waiting and correcting, you will ultimately receive the same purchase at a more inexpensive price/rate and not have longer to pay for it. This is the same thing with the word of GOD and a relationship. We will take the blessing, but with a HIGH cost. We have to learn patience, re-adjust, seek help and do our part if we want what GOD has for us. This all goes back to the appearance of winning rather than the actual result of winning. Sure you can still receive the blessing, but at what cost. I am an advocate for peace, and doing it GOD’s way, even though the process of obtaining it may be a little uncomfortable. Just as your friend can’t get approved for you (but they can offer wise advice), neither can they go heaven for you (but they can offer godly advice to help with your journey).
