How to discern if you’re hearing from the Holy Spirit or Self?
This question came into my spirit after witnessing so many Christians struggle with hearing from God. We can sometimes think that God is in everything and in every situation because naturally it makes sense and it lines up with where you are now. However, we know that God cannot look upon sin right, so if what you are hearing leads to sin in any form, that is NOT God. Also, we must understand God’s expectations for us as Christians. God has not designated us to hold any form of evil in our hearts or in our actions.
What does this look like? I am going to list a few samples:
1. The Holy Spirit will never tell you to do anything that will bring dishonor, shame, and or rejection to another person. It will convict and correct, but that will bring about a freedom. Not feelings of pride.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”– Isaiah 59:2
2. The Holy Spirit will not bring hatred in your heart or produce bad, rotten fruit.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Here is another scripture just to remind you of unlawful behaviors.
“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!”– Galatians 5:14-15 NKJV
I would highly suggest reading the entire book of Galatians.
3. The Holy Spirit leads us to truth…
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.”- John 16:13-14 NIV
In the MSG version, it is stated this way
““I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I’ve said, ‘He takes from me and delivers to you.’”- John 16:12-15 MSG
Wow! Now that was truth handed down in a summary of words.
It is my prayer that you will begin to clearly comprehend the difference between hearing from The Holy Spirit or hearing from self. Remember, always word check your actions and/or thoughts. Make sure your response is in alignment with the expectations of Christ.
